The destination

Sanur, the sunrise side of Bali.

A fishing village that became Bali's first resort town, and then quietly stayed itself.

Sanur sits on the south-east coast, facing Nusa Penida across a reef lagoon. The water is calm enough for children; the beach path runs five kilometres past temples, warungs and the old Bali Beach Hotel. Mornings belong to joggers and fishermen, evenings to the night market.

It is twenty minutes from the airport, thirty by fast boat to Nusa Lembongan, and an hour to Ubud. Most guests find they leave less than they planned to.

The beach path

Five paved kilometres from Mertasari to the pier. Rent bikes at the villa and ride it before breakfast.

Temples & ceremony

Blanjong holds Bali's oldest inscription. Ceremonies still close the beach road a few times a month; we'll tell you when.

Eating

Sindhu night market for satay and babi guling, Jalan Danau Tamblingan for everything else. We keep a short list of places we'd send our own families.
